Context clues are hints that an author gives to help define a difficult or unusual word. The clue may appear within the same sentence as the word to which it refers, or it may follow in a preceding sentence.
HOW TO:
Example: “The kids were (fatigued) after they left the playground. When they came back inside, their lack of energy caused them to fall asleep immediately” The word fatigued is the difficult or unusual word here. It means tired. Phrases like “lack of energy”, “Fall asleep”, and “Left the playground” help you understand the meaning without directly saying it.
Everyday Use:
Context clues are used in reading and writing.
