Context Clues
DEFINITION: Context clues are hints that an author gives to help define a difficult or unusual word. The clue may appear within the same sentence as the word to which it refers, or it may follow in a preceding sentence. HOW TO: Example: “The kids were (fatigued) after they left the playground. When they came back inside, their lack of energy caused them to fall asleep immediately” The word fatigued is the difficult or unusual word here. It means tired. Phrases like “lack of energy”, “Fall asleep”, and “Left the playground” help you understand the meaning without directly saying it. Everyday Use: Context clues are used in reading and writing.
Point of View
the position of the narrator in relation to the story, as indicated by the narrator's outlook from which the events are depicted and by the attitude toward the characters. HOW TO: Here are examples of the 3 major kinds of Point Of View 1. First person point of view involves the use of either of the two pronouns “I” and “we”. “I fell because I did not tie my shoe.” 2. Second person point of view employs the pronoun “you”. “You should try Papa John’s Pizza.” 3. Third person point of view uses pronouns like “he”, “she”, “it”, “they” or a name. “Coach Nisbett is the best psychology teacher ever.” Everyday Use: Point of View is used every day in the stories we tell, books we read and in movies and TV.
