Cause & Effect
DEFINITION: noting a relationship between actions or events such that one or more are the result of the other or others. The cause makes the effect happen. The effect is the result of the cause. HOW TO: An example of cause and effect is wind blowing apples out of a tree. Cause = The wind blowing Effect = The apples falling out of the tree Everyday Use: A cause and effect analysis is an attempt to understand why things happen as they do. Whether students recognize cause-and-effect relationships or not, they are affected by them every day. Students experience them in their own lives, see them occur in the lives of others, read about them in both narrative and expository texts, and are asked to write about them.
Compare And Contrast
COMPARE AND CONTRAST Definition To compare two or more things is to find out what those things have in common; similarities. To contrast two or more things is just the opposite, it is to find out how those things are different. For example, cookies and apples are both delicious snacks, that is where they are similar. On the contrary, cookies are junk food while an apple is a fruit.
Context Clues
DEFINITION: Context clues are hints that an author gives to help define a difficult or unusual word. The clue may appear within the same sentence as the word to which it refers, or it may follow in a preceding sentence. HOW TO: Example: “The kids were (fatigued) after they left the playground. When they came back inside, their lack of energy caused them to fall asleep immediately” The word fatigued is the difficult or unusual word here. It means tired. Phrases like “lack of energy”, “Fall asleep”, and “Left the playground” help you understand the meaning without directly saying it. Everyday Use: Context clues are used in reading and writing.
