Common Types of Texts Definition: A Common Type of Text is any type of writing that is seen regularly or frequently throughout your life. For example a few would be stories, poems, dramas, and literary non-fiction. Everyday Use: We use and see common texts everyday when we read a book, write a story, or study for our next test.
Essay
DEFINITION: a short literary composition on a particular theme or subject, usually in prose and generally analytic, speculative, or interpretative. HOW TO: Here is an example of an Essay. My favorite basketball player is LeBron James. LeBron began playing in the NBA when he was only 18 years old. In his first few seasons LeBron played for the Cleveland Cavaliers in his home state of Ohio. After 7 seasons he joined a new team called the Miami Heat. He played there for 4 seasons and won 2 championships. After leaving Miami, LeBron returned to Cleveland where he is currently still playing. He is an Olympic gold medalist, League MVP and has many endorsements including Nike and Kia. This is Why LeBron James is my favorite basketball player. Everyday Use: Essays are used in school, during tests and in newspapers.
Formal / Informal
DEFINITION: The formal style of writing is illustrated by more progressive vocabulary, longer, more intricate sentences and use of one instead of you. The informal style has less distance between the writer and the reader because the tone is more intimate than in a formal writing style. The informal style has features such as contractions, the use of the first and second person pronouns I and you, simpler vocabulary, and shorter sentences. HOW TO: The formal style is used and is appropriate for more formal occasions such as lectures, academic papers, or ceremonial addresses. An informal writing style is characterized by a relaxed and colloquial way of writing Standard English. It is the style used in most personal e-mail and in some business communications, nonfiction books of common interest, and mass-circulation periodicals. It is appropriate for informal essays and certain kinds of letters. Everyday Use: Formal and Informal style writing is used daily with emails,texts,letters,essays and more.
Tone
DEFINITION: The tone of a literary piece is the viewpoint or attitude that the author adopts regarding a particular character, location or development. Tone can depict various sentiments ranging from somber, melancholy, and critical to amusing, cynical and comical. Importance: Tone assists the reader in ascertaining the writer’s sentiments towards a particular subject and this in turn effects the reader’s perception of the story. HOW TO Example: In her Harry Potter series, author J.K. Rowling has taken an extremely positive, inspiring and uplifting tone towards the idea of love and devotion Everyday Use: Tone is used in every day reading, writing, when you are speaking or listening to someone and when you are listening to songs.
