X and Y axis

Hey kids Professor Eggbeard here today were going to talk about

The X and Y axis

Now before we get started the X and Y axis actually has a different name

Yes, yes it does it’s actually called the Cartesian coordinate system yes the Cartesian coordinate system yes

But instead of the long name we can say the x and y axis

Now, now, now the x and y axis is like using graph paper yes

Now on that graph paper whatever graph people you are using

Youre going to draw a horizontal line across

Now in the middle of the horizontal line you’re going to draw a vertical line up and down, up and down yes

Now the vertical line you drew is called the y axis

So that means the horizontal line you have drawO

Zero

Zip

Zilch

Nada

Nothing

Empty

Naught

Nil

O

Zero, O!  Repeat

Zero is nothing

But it has value

Only when it’s following a number with value

But when it stands alone

Nothing else is in its zone

Nothing from nothing is nothing

zero!

Is the first number in the counting system

0,1,2,3 and so on

Till it gets to ten then switch the position of your zero

here is an example

Take the number one

Pay close attention

Cause we are almost done

Lets take the one

Follow with a zero

More than one zero that makes your number bigger

Come on let’s figure like

One zero is 10

Two zeros are 100

Three zeros are 1,000

Six zeros are a million

Nine zeros are billion

So on and so on

To infinity forever

But can zero be negative?

Never!

Cause it has no value

Zero when it’s by itself

Zero equals nothing

Zip,

Zilch

Naught

Nada

Nothing

You oughta

Know zero

Is the center of the number line

And it’s called an origin

But that’s a different story

Ze-ro numerical plays different roles

Pair it with a number let me show you how it goes

2-0 twenty

3-0 thirty

4-0 forty

5-0 fifty

Zero just grows

Attached to a number

But when it stands alone

Nothing is zero

And there are some rules that apply

To the zero When add, subtract, multiply, divide

A number plus zero is that number

A number minus zero is that number

Every time and when yak

Multiply by

Or divide by zero its zero

Zero is a hero

Cause it can do it all

It can do nothing at all

Cause its zero, zero, zero, zero

This is just a little something for you to do nothing with.but learn…so don’t be a zero…be a hero.like the zero with numbers

n is called what?

The x axis of course

Now that you have drawn the graph right there in the middle where all for lines meet yes that is called the origin

Now from the origin you are going to see tiny boxes all over yes

From each box lying on that x and y axis

You’re going to put numbers on them starting from the middle of the origin

Going up and down, right and left from each box you see

Now to begin remember start from the origin

Now go to one in each direction of the axis

Now go to the next box which is two

Remember to put the number on the line not the box

Now the next one which is three and go on until your axis stops

Now remember you do have negative numbers

So some of the axis have to be negative because you want to put negative numbers on there as well

So all numbers on the left axis are negative

And all numbers on the bottom right axis are negative as well

So that means the other two sides are positive as well

Now, just like the alphabet the x comes before the y

So now if you want to graph coordinates such as 2, 1

You would go over 2 spaces and up 1

And also if you wanted to graph -2,-1

We move 2 spaces to the left and 1 space down, yes

Now, now, now before I end the lesson there is one more thing you should know

With each four lines there is also 4 quadrants

4 sections of the graph and those four quadrants you will label them in Roman numeral form

The first quadrant is the upper right of the axis

The second is the upper left of the axis

The third is the bottom left of the axis

And the fourth is the bottom right of the axis

Now this lesson I hope you have a better understanding of the X and Y axis

Signing off, Professor Eggbeard

Standards

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.RP.A.2.A — Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on a coordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.EE.B.6 — Use similar triangles to explain why the slope m is the same between any two distinct points on a non-vertical line in the coordinate plane; derive the equation y = mx for a line through the origin and the equation y = mx + b for a line intercepting the vertical axis at b.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.RP.A.2.D — Explain what a point (x, y) on the graph of a proportional relationship means in terms of the situation, with special attention to the points (0, 0) and (1, r) where r is the unit rate.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.NS.C.6 — Understand a rational number as a point on the number line. Extend number line diagrams and coordinate axes familiar from previous grades to represent points on the line and in the plane with negative number coordinates.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.NS.C.6.B — Understand signs of numbers in ordered pairs as indicating locations in quadrants of the coordinate plane; recognize that when two ordered pairs differ only by signs, the locations of the points are related by reflections across one or both axes.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.NS.C.6.C — Find and position integers and other rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram; find and position pairs of integers and other rational numbers on a coordinate plane.
