Word Problem Skit
Hi class how are you today? Great and what’s the word for the day?
Word problems that’s right we are going to talk about how to do word problems today
So, when doing your word problems the first thing you want to do is what?
Read the instructions that’s right before you start to work your numbers
You have to pay attention to what they are asking you, so that you will work the word problems correctly
Word problems are just words with your numbers
To see how well you understand your math
For example, when adding you may see things like
How much? How many? What is the sum of?
When you’re subtracting you may see things like
What is the difference? or how much less? Or how many more
Now how many more can be tricky because you can add or subtract
It depends on how well you understand the question
Just as long as it’s right
Here’s an example, Pete has $3 and he wants to buy a burger that’s $5
How much more or how many more dollars will Pete need so that he can buy his $5 burger?
Now, you can do this two ways
If you understand adding and subtracting you can either start with the $3 that Pete has add 2 to it
Or count up to 5 to see that Pete only needs $2 more in order to buy his $5 burger
Or you can take the $5 that the burger will cost and subtract it by the $3 that Pete already has to see how much more he will need in order to get his burger so
That’s 5-3 or 5 subtract 3 or 5 take away 3 equals 2
That lets you know that Pete will need 2 more dollars
That’s easy! Sometimes there will be some information that you don’t need
But you will have to read and pay attention to make sure you understand that you are doing your word problems correctly
Here’s an example
Sarah has 5 dolls and they all have pretty dresses
Sarah’s mom bought her 3 more dolls and they wear pants
How many dolls does Sarah have now?
It doesn’t matter what the dolls have on?
We just need to know how many dolls Sarah has now because her mom just bought her 3 more dolls
Because we are talking about dolls right?
So, Sarah already had 5 dolls and now she has 3 more
So what is the sum of the dolls that Sarah has now
Correct! 8! 5+3= 8 dolls
Okay, let’s take a look at something else
That’s it…
