CLAUSES AND PHRASES Definition A clause is a group of words in a sentence with a subject, and a verb with a predicate. For example, “When it rained, Khao went home” has two clauses. The first one is “When it rained,” with it being the subject, when being the predicate and rained being the verb. A phrase is a group of words with a noun but no verb, or a verb but no noun, it also doesn’t have a predicate. An example of a noun phrase is “the friendly dog” while a verb phrase example would be “is not trying.” Putting these two phrases together gives us a clause within a sentence. “The friendly dog, is not trying to bite me.”
